Why your sink needs that bend

How the water held in the bend under your sink keeps sewer gas out of your home, and how a vent protects that seal.

Homeowner tip

A sink nobody uses, like one in a guest bath, can slowly lose that water. Run the tap for a few seconds now and then to refill the seal.

When to call a pro

Still smell sewer gas after running the tap, or see a leak under the sink? Have a plumber take a look.

About the series

One idea. One minute. No jargon.

  • One part of the home per episode

Each film follows one hidden piece of the house, from what you can see to what sits inside the wall or under the cabinet.

  • Simplified on purpose

The animations are explanatory cutaways, not installation drawings. Color stands in for things you can’t see, and slow changes are sped up.

  • Sources you can check

Every episode lists the published sources behind it. Spot a mistake? Our editorial policy explains how we correct it.

  • Narrated with a synthetic voice

The narrator is an AI-generated voice, not a recording of a real person.

Episode 04: Why your sink needs that bend

Keep in mind: The film is a simplified cutaway, not installation guidance. Sewer gas is drawn as amber particles so you can see it; the real gas is invisible. Evaporation is sped up.
